It was a shaky game, but in the end it was enough for Joe Biden. The Democrat wins the presidential election and becomes the 46th President of the United States of America. This was reported on Saturday by CNN and the news agency AP. Election loser Donald Trump has to vacate the White House after only one term in office.
It took four days of counting before even large US media companies dared to go public with a result. Finally, on Saturday, CNN and AP reported that Biden had won the state of Pennsylvania – and thus the US presidential election.
Even the days before, the signs had increasingly pointed to Biden’s victory, but in decisive states there was a neck-and-neck race to the end.
U.S. elections tend to turn into a thriller during the counting process. What has happened since Tuesday’s election day, however, has been unparalleled in the recent past: Due to the heavy use of postal voting this year, the counting process was particularly lengthy. Until Friday, the results from the last election-deciding states were missing, where counting was done under high pressure. In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, Democratic supporters were more inclined to send their ballots by mail than Republican voters.
